The Bethlehem Star

bethlehem star

The Christmas spirit has overtaken me and as a part of that I am contemplating the Christmas story we were told as kids. As I was remembering it, it occurred to me that the story tells of wise men following the Bethlehem Star till it stopped over the little town of Bethlehem. That thought stopped me too. I thought to myself, “Surely, that is not in the Bible, because stars don’t move over little towns and stop. Stars are millions of miles away and the idea that a star would stop over a little town is ridiculous. That part of the story must be made up for children.”

So I get out my Bible and look it up and this is what I found in the book of Matthew chapter 2. Then Herod, when he had privately called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when you have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.

This can’t be I thought to myself. Stars don’t do this. So I began to search to see what others have said about this and quickly I came upon a youtube video series put together by a lawyer named Frederick Larson. He has stumbled upon some fascinating new technology and has assembled a presentation of the star you will not want to miss. What did I learn? Stars do stop. You can start here at the first video in a series of seven videos lasting about an hour. You will have to go to youtube.com and enter Bethlehem Star to see videos 2 -7 of the series.
