Thanksgiving Dinner Prose

Homeless Thanksgiving

I went to a do gooder feast…

The turkey was trimmed…

All were dressed in their Thanksgiving garb….

Standing behind tin platters full of holiday food…

I refused a name tag, I didn’t need to belong.

They didn’t really need me so I stood beside the door…

I stood around waiting on the needy to come…

The press was there looking for space to fill…

A feel good story on a slow news day…

I stood beside Bobby as he woofed down the grub.

He said he was disabled…

Had been hit by a car…

Said it broke his ankle, but he has other stuff too like high cholesterol…

He said he lived homeless over three years…

He stayed in shelters here and there.

He now has government housing but times are still rough…

Hard to live the whole month on what they pay him…

He said rich people with lots of money are some of the most alone…

They stay in their houses and don’t get out with people…

People people are the rich ones.

People are what make you rich…

How did you get so wise?

When he was homeless he used to walk a lot…

He now tells people if they want to get rid of stress they need to walk…

He talked to the Lord a lot while he walked.

When He is all you have, you talk to Him a lot…

He once rode a bicycle 400 miles from Ft. Myers to Clearwater…

What for I asked?

I needed to get to another shelter…

The shelter in Huntsville put all his stuff out in the rain once.

People don’t really know how to help the homeless…

Now days people turn their back on people…

Families turn their back…

If they didn’t lots of these people wouldn’t be homeless.

People think the government is the answer but it’s not…

What is the answer?

It is people in the community helping each other…

Not turning their backs.

These people need motivation…

How do you motivate a homeless person?

It is one on one…

You have to get to know them…

You have to ask them if they want better for their life…

A big problem is that they are lazy, he said.

When was the best of times in your life?

The four years that I was working in housekeeping at Helen Keller…

You enjoyed working there?

I’ve had other jobs, but that was the best one.

Are you going to watch the Iron Bowl?

I sure am…

Are you an Alabama fan or an Auburn fan…

Alabama fan.

They disappointed me last week against Mississippi State.

I wonder who is playing on Thursday night football…

The Egg Bowl is tonight…

I am talking about Pro Football…

I’m getting a little sleepy…

Better get going.
